Read More Featured Story Update Dear 9-R Families, I hope all are enjoying a great summer so far. While it’s far from over, I wanted to update parents and staff about our district’s plans for both this summer and for reopening of school in August. As we’ve shared in all previous communication, this is an ever-changing situation and we are in continual conversations with state and local authorities around requirements and safety measures based upon conditions involving the virus. Read More News & Announcements Addressing Controversial Topics in School Today’s society is shifting in many ways, adjusting to life with COVID-19, social justice movements, and a heated election are playing a major role. Emotions are high and many are divided on a number of topics. It is our right to hold our positions as individuals and private citizens and it is important that we all have passion and compassion for these issues and for others. Schools Closed/Student Enrichment Days The district has identified an additional two days where schools will be closed to allow teacher’s additional work days to continue to plan and adjust to instruction under the guidelines of COVID-19. The two days are October 30 and November 2; these are in addition to the already identified teacher work day/school closure of November 30. Enrichment opportunities will be available to families of students in grades k-6 at no cost to the families allowing them to be supervised during regular school hours. Children with significant needs will also have an opportunity to be served at the middle and high school grades. Parents of such students will be contacted in the coming week. Today you should receive an email from itslearning that will contain your username and password. 9-R Debt Notice At the election to be held on November 3, 2020, , La Plata County, Colorado (the District”) is submitting one ballot issue concerning the creation of debt or financial obligation. 9-R Update for the Community - 10.20.20 Dear 9-R Community, We have officially made it through the first quarter of the school year, and have thankfully had minimal COVID-19 impacts on students and staff. We thank all the staff, students and parents who have made this possible through their diligence and support of the issued guidelines. The cohort model is allowing continuation of school when a small population is impacted. And also we are appreciative that we have only had one positive case in the district, which was at the very beginning of the school year. Durango High School Cohort to Quarantine Dear 9-R Families, On October 19, 9-R was notified by San Juan Basin Public Health (SJBPH) that an individual at DHS is currently being evaluated for COVID-19 who was in close contact with another individual who tested positive for COVID-19. The school and the district are working proactively with the SJBPH to make the appropriate notifications and next steps for those who may have been in close contact with this individual. Updated COVID-19 Information Since the community has moved to Safer at Home Level 1, some adjustments have been made to our process map. We also have updated documents for families on next steps, scheduling testing with Cedar Diagnostics and letters from Physicians. Community Message - October 12, 2020 Hello 9-R Families, I know the start of school has been a whirlwind. I appreciate those of you who have sent feedback to me and our school leaders. This pandemic clearly continues to present challenges to our educational system, but we do greatly appreciate your patience and grace. Indigenous Peoples’ Day Monday, October 12, 2020, is recognized by many as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This recognition signifies honor and respect for the Indigenous Peoples of this land we call the United States of America. As we honor the Native American students and families that are part of our Durango 9-R community, we wanted to share with you the words of Michael Watchman, Chairman of the district’s Native American Parental Advisory Committee (NAPAC): Investigation Statement - 10.12.20 We appreciate the patience of our community as we investigated a concern that surfaced on Monday regarding what appeared to be a school-sponsored student protest that evolved into public misbehavior on the part of students on Friday, October 2. We recognize that because this event focused on matters that may have different reactions and opinions within our community, it did evoke a lot of emotion.
